Etymology: sphenops[edit]

As I had a hard time finding out the meaning of sphenops, I thought I’d share the results of my research. The first publication (1), in French, states that the fish has a “museau en coin”, meaning “wedge-shaped snout”. In ancient greek, sphen means “wedge”. Ops can mean “face”.
Also, Sphenops sepsoides is commonly called “wedge-snouted skink”.
1. According to this page.
N.B. Google gives a lot of occurrences of the spelling “shenops”. This shows why it is inaccurate.
