BORN: 1894, Ilpendam, N.H, Holland. DIED: 1966, Leiden, Netherlands. CAREER: Schoolteacher, from 1916-26 attached to several schools in Holland; in August 1926 to Java, at first stationed at Batavia, and subsequently teacher of the School of Agriculture at Malang (E. Java) till 1940, interrupted by a 4-year’s leave from Nov. 1932-May 1936, during which he studied biology at Utrecht. Subsequently transferred to the High School at Buitenzorg (W. Java). For a long time president of the Natural History Society, Malang branch. He specialized in lichens, and when at Buitenzorg, he obtained permission to work one day weekly in the Herbarium. Since March 1946 as a stipendiate working in the Leiden Herbarium. In Aug. 1947 he returned to Buitenzorg. In 1951 leader of the biological group of an Indonesian Moluccan expedition in 1953 leader of an expedition to Sumatra West Coast in 1954 of an expedition to Bantam At the end of 1954 he retired on age limit and returned to Holland. Author of some small papers on lichens.

Smeroe road (Sept. 17), Ngabab (Lebaksari, G. Panderman, 1500-1800 m) (Dec. 26).

COLLECTIONS: Especially lichens, c. 5-6000 specim. in private herbarium; some dupl. in Leiden. In Herb. School of Agric. Malang: Plantae ex horto scholae agriculturve malangensis; a number of duplicates is present in Herb. Bog. His private collection of phanerogams (mainly collected before 1932) was partly destroyed by insects, the remaining part was presented to Herb. Bog. in Sept. 1940; plants partly numbered, partly not, if numbered then every specimen, so duplicates too. Herb. Utrecht c. 100 Java plants (pres. 1932). Herb. Bog. lichens collected on above-mentioned (1951 and later) expeditions.
