This taxon has been comprehensively broken up by ornithologists in the USA, but this has not yet been adopted elsewhere. The proposed break-up would be:

Poecile:

P. atricapillus - P. carolinensis - P. cincta - P. davidi - P. gambeli - P. hudsonica - P. hypermelaena - P. hyrcana - P. lugubris - P. montana - P. palustris - P. rufescens - P. sclateri - P. songara - P. superciliosa

Sittiparus:

Pardaliparus:

P. amabilis - P. elegans - P. venustulus

Lophophanes:
