Dispute[edit]

  • the synonymy with Monomorium antipodum is uncertain, based in part on apparent differences in alkaloids between Australian and New Zealand populations (Don, 2007: 112). Note that if the synonymy is upheld, then Monomorium antipodum is the valid name for the species by priority. The only reason to use the name M. fieldi for New Zealand material would be if the identity of Monomorium antipodum cannot be established with certainty from the original description or type material, in which case the name Monomorium antipodum would be a nomen dubium. It is unclear to me at present if that is in fact the case.
