There is a mystery about this species. One specimin was recorded as being collected in South Georgia in the early 1900's. A voucher specimin can be found in the Harvard collection. No one has seen this plant in Georgia since. Any reliable sightings or collections of this plant in Georgia should be noticed here and GPS coordinates recorded for verification of location. The plant in question may have been misidentified or collected further south and mislocated when the specimin was prepared for herbarium use. If this species exists in Georgia it probably has a unique gene pool and thus is valuable to sunflower researchers.
