Etymology and description

[edit]

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the spiral architecture of the species filaments. From the Greek word σπειροειδής (speiroeides) – spiral, helical.

Description: Filaments irregularly joined in clusters, straight to curved, tightly spirally coiled, frequently false branched, sometimes forming nodules. Sheaths firm, thin, colorless, containing one to four trichomes. Trichomes pinkish (old trichomes olivish to greyish), slightly constricted at the cross-walls, frequently with loose to tight screw-like coils, attenuated towards ends. Cells more or less isodiametric or slightly shorter (0.76–1.54 μm) than wide (1.06–1.92 μm). Thylakoids (six to eight) arranged peripherally. End cells rounded.
