The Family Cheirogaleidae has 5 genera and 24 species.

Formerly included in Lemuridae. For status of this taxon, see Rumpler (1975) and Groves (2001c), who reviewed and rejected the hypothesis that they may be more closely related to (non-Malagasy) Loriformes than to (Malagasy) Lemuriformes.
