Dispute[edit]

  • 'C variolosus is subdivided into two allopatric taxa: C. variolosus nodulosus Creutzer, 1799, to which the investigated populations belong, and C. variolosus variolosus Fabricius, 1787. While these have been known for a long time as two subspecies (e.g. [Breuning, 1926] and [Bousquet et al., 2003]), some authors now regard them as distinct species on the basis of a morphological difference (e.g. Turin et al., 2003). The question of the correct taxonomic classification is presently unresolved, as systematic studies remain to be undertaken' - Matern et al. (2007: 619)
