Name[edit]

Metis fasciculata D. Konstantinou & S. Gkelis, 2021

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the presence of filaments joined in fascicles in this species; from the Latin fasciculus – bundle.

  • Type locality: Overhang of the sublittoral zone in Porto Valitsa, Kassandra, Chalkidiki Peninsula, Greece (39.951◦ N, 23.685◦ E), collected on October 10, 2014 at a depth of 21 m; found to live in association with the sponge Axinella damicornis (Esper, 1794).

Description[edit]

Thallus violet to purple, filaments joined in fascicles, rarely solitary, attached to the substratum. Filaments long with a single trichome per sheath, unbranched, straight, curved, or wavy. Sheaths colorless, thin, and slightly distinct. Trichomes clearly constricted at the cross walls. Hormogonia formation present. Cells longer (1.3–2.89 μm) than wide (0.57–1.76 μm). Thylakoids (four to five) arranged peripherally. End cells rounded with a calyptra (?).
