Diagnosis: Leioderma spongioso similis, sed thallo superne arachnoideo, infra sparse pallide rhizinato, sine acidae lichenosae.
Type: U.S.A. NORTH CAROLINA. Swain Co., Great Smoky Mountains Natl. Park [at time of collecting, now the Cherokee Reservation], Ravensford, 35o30.8' N, 83o17.8' W, elev. 650 m, corticolous at base of trunk of Liriodendron tulipifera in mixed deciduous forest, 21 June 2002, T. Tønsberg 30966 (BG--holotype).
Distribution: Leioderma cherokeense is known only from the type locality.
Etymology: The epithet cherokeense refers to the Cherokee Indians who live in the area.
