Type: U.S.A. TENNESSEE, Carter Co., Cherokee National Forest, Dennis Cove, 1976, R.C. Harris 10730 (NY!, holotype).

Ecology: C. petrophila is restricted to shaded non-calcareous boulders and rock outcrops.

Distribution: C. petrophila is known only from eastern North America where it is widely distributed in the Appalachian Mountains, Piedmont, and Ozark Ecoregion.
