This subtribe was paraphyletic accommodating several rather isolated lineages or taxa that remained separate from the two main subclades of Cereeae (Nyffeler & Eggli, 2010). However, reducing Rebutia to its core species and adjusting circumscriptions of Aylostera and Weingartia has improved the situation (Korotkova et al. 2021).
