Etymology: The Genus name derives from the Greek words Аἰγαίον (Aegeaon) – Aegean, referring to the Aegean Sea, and κόκκος (kokos) – granule.

Description

Cells solitary or grouped in irregular clusters, but not forming mucilaginous colonies. Mucilage fine, colorless, around single cells. Cells cylindrical, usually longer (1.17–4.42) than wide (0.61–1.3 μm), with parietal thylakoids. Color of cells is pinkish to pale orange. Reproduction by binary fission.
