User talk:Echidna~specieswiki
echidna's preliminary MediaWiki quick reference guide[edit]
Here are brief examples of the text syntaxes which effect the format and structure of documents in WikiMedia wikis. It is both a tool with which to teach myself and potentially an addition to the help page. So if anyone sees this and has constrctive citisism to offer please add your views.
This is a link to a page yet to be. Creating a MediaWiki link requires [[link text be surrounded by double square bracket characters]].
To create a new page simply create a link as above. To edit the new page simply click the link. (please don't do that to this link or I'll have to do it again).
To acheive a new paragraph break in your text use two returns.
This is a link to google. To make an external link like this [http://web.address.net/ link text] note the space after the webpage address demarks the begining of the 'link text' which is the words which are highlighted that you can click on.
The link to google is typed as [http://www.google.com google].
A multi-word link to google might be typed as [http://www.google.com An example of a mutiple word hyper link to google composed for MediaWiki] in the edit page, would appear as An example of a mutiple word hyper link to google composed for MediaWiki on the Wiki page.
Bold text has three sets of single quotes ('''Bold'''). Italic text has two sets of single quotes (''Italic'')
1st heading level example[edit]
(=is text between single equals=)
Each heading creates an edit button which allows you to edit the section bellow that heading.
2nd heading level[edit]
(==is text between double equals==)
3rd heading level[edit]
(===is text between triple equals===) if a document contains 3 or more levels of heading a contents is automatically created for the page.
4th heading level example[edit]
(====is text between 4 equals====)
5th heading level example[edit]
(=====is text between 5 equals=====)
6th heading level example[edit]
(======is text between 6 equals======) mediaWiki has 6 heading levels
Rules such as the line above are created by typing four hyphens (----). We are asked to use them as sparingly for the sake of readability.
To have text with characters which would have wiki effects such as [[these]] render normaly, requires that they be inside <nowiki>html style nowiki tags</nowiki>
Finally your signature is appended by typing four tildas ~~~~ thus, Echidna 15:33, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed[edit]
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Echidna. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Echidna~specieswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name. If you think you might own all of the accounts with this name and this message is in error, please visit Special:MergeAccount to check and attach all of your accounts to prevent them from being renamed.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
