The most harmful of the numerous common staphylococcal bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus. These gram-positive, sphere-shaped (coccal) bacteria can cause pneumonia, heart valve infections, and bone infections and may be resistant to treatment with some medicines (see image How Bacteria Shape Up). They frequently cause skin infections.
