Description
English: Squamellaria wilsonii (Rubiaceae) This is one of a strange group of species known as "Ant Plants". It is an epiphyte with a huge tuberous base, growing on the trunk of of an unrelated tree. The tuber (a "domatium") supports a colony of ants that use if for shelter and help nourish the plant. It is one of several related ant plants in the family Rubiaceae. Squamellaria is a genus native to Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, and S. wilsonii is seen here on the island of Taveuni at about 2,200 feet elevation in forest along Somosomo Creek, on October 12th 2017, image 2924.
