| Description |
Español: Macho y hembra de Phallichtys tico, una olomina endémica de los lagos y ríos en la zona Norte de Costa Rica. Su tamaño máximo es 35 mm. Viven en cardúmenes pequeños cerca de la orilla, entre la maleza, donde se alimentan de algas, diatomeas, cieno y larvas de insectos. Como en otros miembros de la familia Poeciliidae, el macho se caracteriza por tener su aleta anal modíficada en una estructura conocida como gonopodio, que utiliza durante la cópula. Son vivíparos.
Esta especie fue descrita por el ictiólogo costarricense William Bussing en 1963. El epíteto "tico" hace referencia al gentilicio con el que se conoce a los costarricenses en América Latina. Don William falleció en 2014, luego de una larga trayectoria llena de invaluables contribuciones al conocimiento ictiológico de Costa Rica y Centroamérica. Esta ilustración se realizó en su memoria, y en el marco del IV Simposio Latinoamericano de Ictiología, a realizarse en Costa Rica en Noviembre de 2015. |
