Native, warm-season, perennial, erect grass to 80 cm tall (often less than 50 cm). Found in roadsides, drains, woodlands and lightly grazed pastures where soils are moist over the warmer months. Often associated with carpet grass (axonopus fissifolius) and low fertility soils that are periodically waterlogged (e.g. duplex soils, drains and swamp edges). This species differs from scrobic (P. scrobiculatum) by stems arising from a short knotted rootstock, smooth fertile lemmas, spreading flowerhead branches and axils not dark coloured.
