морская светящаяся бактерия. Культура любезно предоставлена Светланой Хрульновой и Ильёй Мануховым из лаборатории Генетики бактерий Института генетики и селекции промышленных микроорганизмов (ГосНИИ генетика). Культура получена растиранием суспензии клеток шпателем на агаризованной питательной среде. Фотография сделана в полной темноте. Светящиеся точки – отдельные колонии культуры, светящиеся области – «газонный» рост культуры. Свечение происходит благодаря присутствию в геноме Vibrio aquamarinus генов lux-оперона, кодирующих бактериальную люциферазу – аналог люциферазы, обеспечивающей свечение светлячков. Размер колоний – 0,5 – 1 мм в диаметре. Род Vibrio включает более 80 видов, повсеместно встречающихся в морских и пресных водах. Некоторые виды хорошо известны, как патогены человека, например холерный вибрион Vibrio cholerae; патогенны также около десяти других видов Vibrio. Светимость культуры встречается как среди патогенных, так и среди непатогенных видов Vibrio. При некоторых инфекциях поражённые бактерией ткани тоже приобретают светимость, а свободноживущие бактерии придают светимость большим участкам морей. Культура этой бактерии идентифицирована в лаборатории Генетики бактерий ГосНИИ генетика путём секвенирования генов, кодирующих 16S рибосомальную РНК, и ряда house-keeping генов, и является новым видом, названным авторами aquamarinus из-за аквамаринового оттенка свечения культуры.
