Summary

Description Helenium bolanderi—Coastal sneezeweed. Grows in wet areas along the coast from northern Sonoma County to Coos County, Oregon. Early 20th century garden books said the floriferous species made a good cutting plant for bouquets. There are 15 to 30 ray flowers measuring up to 25 mm in length. Some people see the visible portion of the up to 1000 disk flowers as purplish; others, as brownish (the ones in the photo will darken with age). These disk flowers become yellow near the stem. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
