Summary

Description Native, warm-season, annual or short-lived perennial, tufted grass to 1 m tall. Leaves are soft; leaf sheaths are narrow and not inflated, only basal sheaths may be hairy. Flowerheads are a primary axis of racemes 7-18 cm long. Spikelets are 2-flowered, hairy, 4.5-6 mm long and taper into a bristle. The lower glume is usually a reddish (but also pale to black) swelling (cup-like ring) at the spikelet base. Flowering is in spring and summer. Widespread in native grassland. A palatable and high quality stock feed.
