Summary

Description
English: Short snouted lancetfish Alepisaurus brevirostris. #20593 U. S. N. M., obtained in a New York market by E. G. Blackword.

Comment: The specimen was originally identified by Goode and Bean as Alepisaurus ferox because it was the only known species in the genus Alepisaurus as of 1896. The second species of lancetfish Alepisaurus brevirostris was only described by Gibbs in 1960. The depicted specimen is Alepisaurus brevirostris since the dorsal fin is low rather than high in its anterior, lacks free anterior rays and is formimg curved profile. The other characteristic traits are the head and the snout short rather than long. See also the images of Alepisaurus ferox and Alepisaurus brevirostris in the FishBase and Fischer, W., Bianchi, G., Scott, W. B. FAO Species Identification Guide for Fishery Purposes. Eastern central Atlantic. – Rome, 1981.
