Tuber rufum Pico ex Fries Image location: Tres Aguas, Refugio Forestal, Fresneda de la Sierra Tiron, Spain Christine Fischer, truffle researcher at the Forest Science Center of Catalonia, Spain, leads truffle and mushroom forays in Spain. These truffles were found using trained dogs. Christine identified the truffles and took the photos labeled T rufum, posted with her permission, in her laboratory. Tuber rufum Pico:Fr.1823 var rufum Fruit bodies are light-colored, small and sub-globose or irregular with very light reddish beige to brown with roughly-smooth surface made up of small, flattened warts. Found in spring through late autumn, growing with conifers and deciduous trees with wide range of habitats. Mild smoky odor. There are at least 5 varieties of T. rufum described: apiculatum, rufum, ferrugineum, lucidum & nitidum. Gleba pale white to pinkish or brownish-grey with cottony white marbling of sterile tissue, with gangliform pattern. Ascus, with sinuous, long peduncle, 1-6 spores/ascus, most frequently 3-4 spores/ascus. Spores are yellow brown, ellipsoid to roundish with spiny ornamentation, slightly curved at the distal end. from Funghi Ipogei D’Europa Amer Montecchi & Mario Sarasini AMB Centro Studi Micologici A trained dog was used to find the truffles. Recognized by sight Used references: Christine Fischer, truffle researcher at the Forest Science Center of Catalonia, Spain, identified the truffles found on this foray. She said that T rufum odor is very mild and smoky .
