- Type locality: Lake Itasca, Clearwater County, Minnesota, U.S.A.
- Holotype: Itas 2/24 s-1w from the collection of the Itasca Microbial Observatory, Department of Biological Sciences, North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND, USA, cryopreserved as CCMP 2446 (Guillard-Provasoli National Center for Culture of Marine Phytoplankton).
- Isotype: Itas 2/24 S-122w, also available as CCMP2259.
