- Type species: Wesserpeton evansae Sweetman & Gardner, (in press, 2012)
- Etymology: Wess, from Wessex, an ancient British kingdom which incorporated the Isle of Wight + erpeton, from the Greek ἑρπετόν (herpeton), meaning creeping animal and used in the construction of the name of the type genus Albanerpeton Fox and Naylor, 1982.
