A few genera are presently not well-classified, and/or have classifications which are disputed:

• Spelopelminae: In 2003, the genus Spelopelma was subsumed into the genus Hemirrhagus, thus subsuming the former subfamily Spelopelminae into Theraphosinae.
• Brachionopus Pocock, 1897. Dollar has recently proposed transferring this genus to the family Barychelidae; a proposal which is still disputed.
• Proshapalopus Mello-Leitão, 1923. This has been placed in several different sub-families by several different arachnologists.
