I am sorry to report that even though there are many plants being widely grown as "Begonia cubensis", it is doubted by experts that any of them are the true species. I have personnally been searching for this species, but have yet to find a plant that will set fertile seed, an indicator of species status.

The plant pictured is most probably a cultivar that may not have any cubensis heritage, for there are many species of Begonia native to the Americas that have a similar appearance.

A way to deal with this would be to add synonyms to the species that have been 'falsely' named B. cubensis, and then remove this 'obsolete' taxon. However, if many people in the world use B. cubensis as "well I don't know what kind of Begonia this really is so I just name it B. cubensis." For this reason I would suggest to leave this taxon in the database, add links to the 'proper' names, add the synonyms on those pages, and perhaps add {{disputed}} to this page. -Kempm 13:45, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
There is a valid taxon of Begonia with the epithet cubensis. It's just that it is not known to be presently in cultivation, and hence my challenge to the picture. This is the first picture of Begonia that I have come across in Wikispecies but, alas, it would have to be cubensis. I can think of only a few other species under cultivation that are so questioned. But thanks for this reply because there are many many cases of synonyms to which your advice would apply. Thanks for your help. - Begonial 16:11, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
