Abies alba / Pinus picea[edit]

@Andyboorman and RLJ: - there is no citation in Miller's Abies #1 description to suggest that Abies alba is a replaced synonym, or even homotypic, with Pinus picea L. Where does this come from? I can see nothing to suggest that Miller's and Linnaeus's names are anything other than heterotypic. - MPF (talk) 22:42, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Both names share the reference to Tournefort, Institutiones Rei Herbariae: 585 ("Abies laxi folio, fructu sursum spectante"). For names published until 1953, this is sufficient for a replacement name. See also Art. 41.3 ICN and especially Example 6. --RLJ (talk) 09:41, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RLJ: Thanks! Is anything known about the origin (what part of the species' range it originated in) of the Clifford specimen designated as the lectotype? Could be a problem in the event of the discovery of any cryptic speciation. - MPF (talk) 12:34, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am not aware of any documentation for the origin of this specimen, unfortunately! --RLJ (talk) 13:47, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As feared / expected ... ;-) MPF (talk) 14:34, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
