Nomenclature: Originally introduced by Colosi (1915) as Runcinidea, a "sectio" (above familia level) of Tectibranchia containing the familia Runcinidae only. Spelling and rank emended by Colosi (1918: 86) to a "subsectio" Runcinida (of equal rank to Thecosomata) containing the familia Runcinidae only; by Burn (1963: 9) to subordo Runcinacea; ranked by Odhner (in Franc, 1968: 841) as ordo; spelling emended by Golikov & Starobogatov (1989: 68) to ordo Runciniformes. The name Runcinida as here listed was reinstated by Malaquias et al. (2009).
This reinstatement by WoRMS would appear to be inappropriate and in violation of the principles of taxonomy since a genus Runcinida already exists and since prior names for this ordo have previously been used. Until a renaming of either the genus or the ordo is done by the appropriate authorities, the ordo name Runcinacea will be used here as this treatment is also used by GBIF.
