- Holotype: QM-W 29124, ♂.
- Type locality: Unnamed Melaleuca swamp, Whitsunday Islands National Park, southeastern corner of Whitsunday Island, Queensland; 20°17’50”S 149°02’51”e; elevation 9 m above sea level (a.s.l.); Rod Hobson, Patrick Couper and Andrew Amey; 23rd October 2010.
- Etymology: Named for Christopher M. Austin, whose research on the genus Cherax (e.g., Austin, 1986, 1996; Austin & Knott, 1996) has contributed enormously to our current understanding of this large and culturally significant group of crayfish.
