Name[edit]

Holotype: AMNH 253501. Paratypes: AMNH 253503 (15); MRAC B1-19-P-1-4 (4); ZSM 40758 (4); CU 96796 (4).

Type locality: Republic of Congo, Le´koumou Province, Le´koumou River at Bridge, 3°22'49.30"S, 13°15'55.01"E.[1]

Etymology: The specific name is a combination of the Latin ater, meaning black or dark, and crinis, in the sense of the tail of a comet. Named in reference to the striking black marking of the caudal peduncle and anal fin of mature males.
