Guidance on using this template?[edit]

I have tried including this template on Wikispecies pages but it leaves the {{{1}}} which results in a 404 link. Help? Michael pirrello (talk) 15:55, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael pirrello: Simply add the {{Global}} code snippet below the "Links" subsection of the "References" section, as seen in for example this edit made about an hour ago. Please also consider the following:
  • The {{Global}} template should be entered exactly "as is", i.e. without any added parameters.
  • The {{Global}} template itself doesn't "do" anything, instead it relies on the {{BHL}}, {{EOL}}, {{GBIF}} and {{ION}} templates which in turn transcludes the links to the respective external sites (which are all third party and unrelated to Wikispecies).
  • Sometimes some of those external sites makes changes to their databases or file systems etc. Any modification of that sort can affect how well the {{Global}} template works. It can sometimes be hard or time-consuming for us to make the necessary changes in our templates accordingly, since we have no control over those third party servers or their software. In some rare cases we've even found that their web services are temporarily offline altogether, which of course makes it impossible for our software to make contact.
  • At the moment all of the BHL, GBIF and ION links seems to work, but the EOL links does not. I have no detailed information (yet) about why this is the case.

Global is an obsolete template and should be replaced by "taxonbar". Burmeister (talk) 12:59, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Burmeister https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikispecies:Templates references Panthera tigris as an ideal for Wikispecies pages, and that does not include a taxonbar. If Global should be deprecated, can we adjust the statement "Template for use on all ICZN taxon pages" to note that? I'm just a beginner who is happy to follow rules, but I don't see what you've recommended reflected anywhere? Michael pirrello (talk) 15:57, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Taxonbar was approved recently, its usage is still low for that reason. Global as a old template, the use is not widely too. We don't have rules for all yet. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 16:13, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
