Note[edit]

The original spelling was habroptilus, and is based on the Greek noun "ptilos", meaning "plumage". As such, it does not change spelling even if Strigops is feminine. Arguments that the name could be potentially interpreted as adjectival are likewise contradicted by ICZN Article 31.2.2, which states that if there are reasons to consider that a name could be a noun or could be an adjective, then the default is to treat it as a noun unless the original author specifically indicated otherwise (which Gray did not).
