Traditionally included in Pipridae, morphological differences suggested Sapayoa was misplaced. Sibley & Monroe (1990) proposed to place it in a separate Infraorder. The DNA studies by Fjeldså et al. place it close to Calyptomena & Smithornis of the Eurylaimidae, so it is here placed in a separate family within Eurylaimoidea.
