This subtribe (RMF clade) is monophyletic once Duma has been segregated from Muehlenbeckia and placed in the ADP clade (Polygoninae) (Schuster et al., 2011). However. both Fallopia and Muehlenbeckia are paraphyletic, with species of the later nested in the former (Desjardins, 2015). In addition there is strong evidence of intergeneric hybrids in the subtribe particularly between species of Muehlenbeckia and the well researched Reynoutria japonica (syn. Fallopia japonica) (Bailey, 2013 & Desjardins, 2015). Botanically the existence of intergeneric hybrids presents challenges to taxonomy. Desjardins' solution is to subsume the whole subtribe into an expanded Fallopia, as this genus has priority under ICN. A classification is presented in his thesis, but this has yet to be formally published according to ICN articles. The reduction of this sub-tribe into a single genus is of course contraversial for a geographically disparate group. Therefore, a conservative approach to the taxon is retained under WS guidelines until formal publication and consensus emerges. Andyboorman (talk) 20:44, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
