Evidence is not definitive regarding the circumscription in this subfamily. The main uncertainty revolves around the the monophyletic Andropogoneae – Sacchareae clade. Therefore the debate concerns whether or nor either Andropogoneae or Sacchareae are circumscribed as a Tribe. The position here is to promote Sacchareae over Andropogoneae until consensus is complete (Soreng et al, 2012). One advantage of which is to remove many genera incertae sedis from the Sub-family even though there are still a few unplaced at the tribal level.
