Notes[edit]
- Thompson, F.C. (2008: 13) notes that Melangyna viridiceps has often been confused with Simosyrphus grandicornis, and specifically that Melangyna viridiceps sensu Miller (1921: 307, pl. 48, fig. 4) is a misidentification of S. grandicornis
- Miller (1921: 307) reported Melangyna viridiceps from New Zealand, both from the mainland and 'it is also common on the Kermadec Islands'
- Macfarlane et al. (2000) claimed that Melangyna viridiceps is present on the Kermadecs, but not in mainland N.Z.
- no other recent sources record Melangyna viridiceps from New Zealand (mainland or Kermadecs)
- it is therefore likely that all New Zealand (mainland or Kermadecs) records are based on misidentifications of Simosyrphus grandicornis
