Note: Analysis by Wang et al. (2020) do not support the subgenera and associated sections and subsections over and proposed replacing this with a simplified system involving only 15 sections - Gwillimia, Gynopodium, Kmeria, Macrophylla, Magnolia, Maingola, Manglietia, Michelia, Oyama, Rytidospermum, Splendentes, Talauma, Tuliparia, Tulipastrum, and Yulania. Done. The vast majority of the species of this important and decorative genus are unfortunately stubs.
