Notes[edit]

Curcuma kwangsiensis was legitimately described by Lee & Liang (1977). Chen (1981) also noted two varieties Curcuma kwangsiensis var. puberula and var. affinis, which should not be regarded according to latest results (Liu & Wu, 1999). Bencaological studies on Curcuma species (Fan & Shi, 1988) showed that the traditional medicine Yujin recorded before the end of Ming dynasty was the tuber of Curcuma longa and the traditional medicine Jianghuang and E-zhu have been confused for a long time. But the main original plants of Yujin are Curcuma aromatica and/or Curcuma wenyujin featuring yellow tuber and those of Jianghuang are made of Curcuma kwangsiensis. E-zhu was mainly made from Curcuma phaeocaulis (Wu & Liu, 1989). Chromosome numbers in Curcuma kwangsiensis are reported to be 2n = 84 (Chen & Huang, 1988).

Curcuma kwangsiensis is also one of the species grouped under the term "Radix Curcumae", and therefore has been examined for its content of chemical constituents like essential oil, curcumin and curcuminoids, etc.. Also an interesting attempt was made on the histomorphological identification of Radix Curcumae (Xiao, Qiao & Su, 1998).

In latest reports Curcuma kwangsiensis was repeatetly examined on molecular basis (Cao, Sasaki, Fushimi & Komatsu, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004). Similar, Xiao et al. (2001, 2004) obtained very interesting results from extensive RAPD, histological and morphological studies based on numerical taxonomy.

According to latest results C. kwangsiensis is not represented by only one species, but it should be treated as a species complex (Xiao et al. 2001, 2004). The two already described (Y.H. Chen, 1981) varieties

C. kwangsiensis var. puberula (毛莪术 mao e-zhu (hairy zedoary));
C. kwangsiensis var. affinis (紫脉莪术 zi-mai e-zhu (purple-veined zedoary));

therefore should be considered as part of this species complex.
