Talk:Bryconalestes

Bryconalestes is considered a synonym of Alestes by Catalog of Fishes and a synonym of Brycinus by FishBase, but is retained here based on the rather well-corroborated phylogenetic results of Zanata and Vari [2005: 92 (cladogram), 105-106 (supporting characters)]. They found B. derhami, B. intermedius, and B. longipinnis to constitute a distinct clade that is sister to the majority of Alestidae, viz., sister to a group (the "small alestids") consisting of Micralestes, Rhabdalestes, Hemigrammopetersius, Virilia, Brachypetersius, Clupeocharax, Tricuspidalestes, Ladigesia, Lepidarchus, Alestopetersius, Duboisialestes, Nannopetersius, and Phenacogrammus.

Given this phylogenetic position, retention of Bryconalestes as a distinct genus appears eminently warranted.

Catalog of Fishes actually seems a bit confused on this, since, despite stating Bryconalestes as synonym of Alestes, it gives two other recent references (now also included below), both of which (it says) held Bryconalestes to be valid, rather than a synonym. November 2012 update[edit]

Catalog of Fishes now follows Zanata and Vari 2005 in recognizing Bryconalestes as valid genus. Koumz (talk) 18:43, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
