Distribution[edit]

  • New Zealand subregion [endemic]
    • Three Kings Islands
    • North Island
    • South Island
    • Stewart Island
  • NOTE: Almost certainly naturally and actually absent from elsewhere (i.e., Kermadecs, Chathams and subantarctic islands)

Three Kings Islands[edit]

  • 3 or 4 species are present, but the identities of only 2 of these (A. rugosus, A. turbotti) are certain. The remaining 1 or 2 species could be (1) A. fairburni only; (2) A. fairburni and a very similar undescribed species ("triregius"); (3) "triregius" only; or (4) two undescribed species, "triregius" and one other, both very similar to A. fairburni. Note that "triregius" may also be present on the Poor Knights.

Poor Knights Islands (North Island: ND)[edit]

  • 4 or 5 species are present, including both A. rugosus and A. turbotti. The remaining 2 or 3 species on the Poor Knights are A. fairburni, an undescribed species ("heraldicus"), and possibly "triregius". The Poor Knights species "heraldicus" is very similar or perhaps the same as an undescribed species from Mount Moehau (CL), which is probably associated with Gahnia.

Notes[edit]

The species are all moderately large to very large, and flightless. The current taxonomic concept of the genus derives from Kuschel (1982: 281). We can be confident that all nomina currently placed in Anagotus truly belong there, and it is unlikely that any existing nomina that should be placed in Anagotus are currently misplaced elsewhere. A survey of the taxonomic literature reveals 18 valid nominal species, but 5 of these are dubiously valid, and probably represent unpublished synonyms of other species of Anagotus. There are, however, about 13 known or suspected undescribed species. The genus is in urgent need of taxonomic revision at the species level. The genitalia have not been described for any of the species.
