Differing opinions[edit]

There are two distinct taxonomic opinions for this section. The simplest proposes a single species based around Acer tataricum L., Sp. Pl.: 1054. (1753) divided into five subspecies using regional distributions and morphology. These are Acer tataricum subsp. aidzuense, Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala, Acer tataricum subsp. semenovii, Acer tataricum subsp. tataricum and Acer tataricum subsp. theiferum. Govaerts et al. (2023) can be consulted for distribution maps.

The second taxonomic opinion focuses on the two extremes of distribution and morphology segregating two species - Acer tatarica s.l. for the western range and Acer ginnala for China and Japan. This model suggests three varietates; Acer ginnala var. aidzuense, Acer ginnala var. ginnala and Acer ginnala var. theiferum. Leaving Acer tataricum with one subspecies Acer tataricum subsp. semenovii and its autonym.

Both models recognise intermediates and putative hybrids many of which have been introduced into horticulture. These are taxonomic opinions and both are found in science, education, forestry and horticulture. As there is no definitive evidence favouring one over the other, botanists and other interested parties are free to chose. Andyboorman (talk) 11:02, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
