Genetics [edit]
Originally classified as fungi, these budding bacteria were brought back into the bacterial classification by the sequence homology of their 16S rRNA to other bacteria. Planctomycetes remain a deeply-branching member of the bacterial domain.
Physiology [edit]
Distinguished from other phyla of bacteria by the absence of peptidoglycan in the cell walls. Some members of this phyla have internal membrane structures that surround the nucleoid, reproduce by budding. Most members are chemo-organotrophs and obligate aerobes. These bacteria tend to be slow-growing as compared with other bacteria.
Distribution [edit]
