LycaonPOV: Maybe it would be more appropriate to only use the scientific name as caption

  • You're right. Shouldn't even be POV, but NPOV --Kempm 09:57, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More images

How about if the article is about family? Can one add more than one image? I think it would be nice if there would be more images with <gallery>-tag. Then images are small but you could still add caption. – linnea (talk) 10:11, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Not sure. I don't oppose per se myself. But I think this was agreed to only include one image. (If we include more images we are starting to be a clone of wiki commons). I'll have to pass the official answer to someone else though, as I don't recall who said what on this matter. --Kempm 11:39, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
A page with multiple images: Carassius. The images were all added on 14 March 2007[1] and so far no one objected. Maybe it is OK then on non-species pages? --Georgeryp 05:53, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Hadn't noticed. So much work, so little time ;-) Thanks. Lycaon 06:25, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Lycaon removed plural images from Carassius, but the guideline still says "Only one image per species" not "Only one image per page". I think we should use automated galleries at the Genus level. --Jsk 02:11, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No fair use?

What should be done about species that went extinct between January 1, 1923, and the present? Should they be left unphotographed for the next 95 years? --69.246.213.81 22:48, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

This does seem like a good justification for fair use. -- Zanimum 17:55, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photos needed?

Does this project have anything like w:Category:Wikipedia requested photographs? I live near some botanical gardens and would like to take photos of anything you're missing. -69.114.223.239 00:38, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer. I think I can safely say that +95% of species here presented have no illustration yet. Lycaon 06:23, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Keep in mind, there are some species with pictures on Commons or with articles on Wikipedia that do not have a page at the species-level here yet (e.g. Maclura pomifera - common name: Osage-orange) --Georgeryp 14:32, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikilinking species names in image captions

I have seen many taxon pages where the image caption is a link. I don't recall noticing anyone remove these links and I think the links are a good idea. Shouldn't this be mentioned in this guideline or be a suggested "standard"? --Georgeryp 19:01, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I think it is good idea. – linnea (talk) 14:27, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm going to go ahead and add a line suggesting that such a link would be helpful. EVula // talk // 16:51, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image Preference

I am not certain how to phrase this question, but here goes. Is a photograph preferred over a detailed svg and is a scan from an 1800's book of illustrations of a species more desirable than a photograph of the species? I have phrased this question to be answered with yeses or nos and what I would like to get is an understanding of how to chose an image for the different classification levels. Thanks -- CarolSpears 15:45, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] verifying identification of species in picture before uploading

I have a photo with a tentative species identification (it's here), and I'd like to upload it -- but I want to make sure of the species. We have not been able to find a match in our caterpillar book; the tentative identification comes from an amateur expert. What can I do towards verifying the species? At what level of confidence is it reasonable to upload an image? Thanks. --Woozle 18:49, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

  • just include a question mark (?) in the image caption Stho002 20:51, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
