Add topicWelcome to Wikispecies!
[edit]Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:
- Help:Contents provides a good introduction to editing Wikispecies.
- Templates are there to help you to follow our syntax and formatting standards.
- Have a look at Done and to do.
If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.
If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.
Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:41, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
Template:Disambiguation
[edit]Hello Tungolen, thank you for allowing Template:Disambiguation for a second category. But now, all items are in 2 categories, e.g. in Category:Publication disambiguation pages and errorneously in the parent Category:Disambiguation pages. Please can you alter the code? Kind regards, --Thiotrix (talk) 10:03, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look and fix it. Tungolen (talk) 10:12, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- I needed to put the second category behind an if statement, which seems to be working as expected now. Please let me know if you notice any other unintended fallout of that change. Tungolen (talk) 10:18, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
Wen-Jun Li
[edit]Please check that this edit was what you intended, as Wen-Jun_Li is not one of the listed authors. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:25, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- It's correct - Wen-Jun Li is the 10th author on the paper, so is hidden behind the et al. The cite journal template only lists the first 8 authors, but I did include Wen-Jun Li in the data being passed to the template, if you check the source. Tungolen (talk) 22:39, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- OK, thank you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:49, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
Image template
[edit]Thank you for your edits to date. However, we do not use {{Image}} on any page other than the species, as it produces a misleading caption taken from the page name. We select the image file from commons and use {{Image|file name|species label}}. See Daphnandra as an example. I hope this helps. Andyboorman (talk) 15:20, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, that's good to know. I'll go back and fix up the image edits I worked on. Tungolen (talk) 22:08, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- Can I get your opinion of this solution? wikidata:Q4043977 includes the structured data "depicts" as a qualifier of the image. I made a version of the image template (currently at
{{Image/sandbox}}) which pulls this in. I couldn't figure out how to pull in the media legend property for some reason. At any rate, this would make it work to just use{{Image}}on other taxa pages. It would still result in the less precise caption on pages without the correct qualifier set on wikidata, but I'm thinking a hidden maintenance category could be used. Here's examples:- Menida shows it working correctly
- Victor Ivanovich Motschulsky shows that it doesn't change anything for the use of
{{Image}}on author pages - Corpuscularia shows it without a depict qualifier on wikidata, so it adds a maintenance category (pretend it's a hidden category for now)
- Menida violacea shows it not adding the maintenance category on a species page. I also exempted rank=subspecies and rank=nothospecies from the maintenance category.
- What do you think? I can also bring this up on WS:VP to get more input, but from the discussion on Template_talk:Image I suspect you have the strongest opinions about this issue. Tungolen (talk) 00:05, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- That looks like an elegant solution (contrary to the above, the current
{{Image}}can also be used on author biographies). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:54, 28 July 2025 (UTC)

I moved the sandbox version to main; This is a note to say I think further discussion should go to the Template_talk:Image#Legends Tungolen (talk) 21:58, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
Blank
[edit]Blank pages get deleted. Please write some meaningful content if you wish to have a user page. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:31, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- That's reasonable enough! Tungolen (talk) 21:46, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
Delete requests
[edit]Hello. I have had a look through your recent requests. However, there are pages, such as Spilophorus that would be affected by having Spilophorus (Prospilophorus) deleted without subsequent edits. I do not have the required expertise to make these edits. Can you contact another editor, such as @Mariusm: more familiar with invertebrates? Best regards. Andyboorman (talk) 12:50, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
- You're doing a great job in eliminating the page-names Genus (Subgenus) and replacing them with the names Subgenus which are simpler and clearer. Why won't you redirect the resulting redundant pages rather than request them to be deleted? I think this would be a better choice. Mariusm (talk) 15:50, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
- I redirected the resulting mainspace pages, but marked the associated taxonavigation templates for deletion. I can redirect those too if we want, but I didn't see the point in doing so once they're unused. Per Andy's example, Spilophorus (Prospilophorus) is currently a redirect; it's only Template:Spilophorus (Prospilophorus) that I marked for deletion. The templates aren't likely to be accidentally re-created or stumbled upon, in my opinion. But if the consensus is to redirect those too, then I'll do that. Tungolen (talk) 23:49, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
- Out of the pages currently in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, the exception to this is Dermeanthrenus (Dermeanthrenina) which I marked for deletion instead of redirecting because it was seemingly created after someone misread "subtribe" as "subgenus" and created a page for something that didn't exist. Tungolen (talk) 02:38, 13 August 2025 (UTC)

Apologies
[edit]Apologies, Tungolen, I thought I was putting the updated image template code from mainspace into the correct place in your equivalent userspace image template, but I didn't realize I had put it on the wrong level of page. Apologies for my error, and thank you again Jonesey95 for your template wisdom.
Best wishes, Zinnober9 (talk) 19:36, 12 August 2025 (UTC)

Cite journal
[edit]Thank you. for your great work on {{Image}}.
Would you have some time to work on {{Cite journal}}? There are some outstanding feature requests on its talk page, but do ping me if anything is not clear. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:55, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to take a look. Tungolen (talk) 05:49, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
