Welcome to Wikispecies![edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:01, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled rights[edit]

Dear Ongava, You have been granted autopatrolled user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines. In addition to what registered users can do, autopatrollers can have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol). The autopatrol user right is intended to reduce the workload of new page patrollers and causes pages created by autopatrolled users to be automatically marked as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Autopatrollers.

This user has autopatrolled rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

You may as autopatrolled use the autopatrolled user box on your user page. Copy and paste the following code on your user page: {{User Autopatrolled}}

If you have a Meta-Wiki user page, you can put the user box for Meta on your Meta-Wiki user page.

There's always a need of patrolling files edited by unregistered users, and if you think you have a good understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines and want to help out with patrolling, you can request patrol rights at Patroller.

Hi Andy. Thank-you; this was unexpected but I'm happy if it helps reduce the workload of admins. Ongava (talk) 11:33, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Species in subgenera[edit]

Hello Ongava, for species lists in subgenera (e.g. Scolia (Discolia)), please use template sgsps (not the outdated template sgsp) or - for better readability - keep template sp. Reason: Page titles for species should be just the binomen, e.g. Scolia bohemani, not Scolia (Discolia) bohemani. Likewise for subspecies, the page title should be the trinomen without subgenus in brackets. Thanks and kind regards, Thiotrix (talk) 09:52, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Thiotrix. This is good to know, and actually makes much more sense to me. But I was following what was already there, believing this to be the accepted way. I'll fix it. Appreciate you letting me know, I'm still learning every day and today was my very first taxon with a subgenus. Ongava (talk) 15:56, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lepisma and allies[edit]

I'm not sure if you're active, but be careful on the Lepisma and related pages with names that are extension of that such as Ctenolepisma, where lots of names based on places end -"ensis" (of the somewhere). That ending makes an adjective that works in both masculine and feminine forms, but annoyingly recent decisions in nomenclature deem all these genera to be neuter, so any "-lepisma" need the revised neuter ending "-ense" instead. per: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-ensis Sjl197 (talk) 15:42, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You are probably correct that these names need changing. What I had done was to record the taxonomic act of their first publication, as published. This we have to do anyway, irrespective of what becomes of the name later. In future, when I come across a validly published source where an expert has properly emended a name, I shall record that taxonomic act as well, but not before. I record existing published taxonomic acts here, I do not make nomenclatural decisions, that I leave to the taxonomists of the groups concerned. Just my way of doing things. If yours is different that is absolutely fine. Ongava (talk) 08:43, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
