Name

[edit]

Tracheini Laporte, 1835 (1838)

Note: the history of the various spellings is extremely confusing; Laporte's original spelling was "Trachisidae", a spelling not adopted by subsequent taxonomists, and not in compliance with the ICZN, which requires that a family-rank name is created by using the stem of the genitive singular. The overwhelming majority of later treatments adopted the spelling "Trachyini", which corresponds to the genitive singular form in modern (but not Ancient) Greek, also violating the ICZN. It was not until 2009 when the Commission intervened, ruling in ICZN Opinion 2222 [1] that the spellings Trachisidae, Trachyini, Trachydini, Trachyni, and Trachynini are all incorrect spellings, permanently unavailable, and the accepted spelling is Tracheini, even though it also does not correspond to the genitive singular (the correct spelling should be "Trachini", similar to the spelling for the subtribe "Brachina", based on Brachys). see [1]
