ITIS follows Nelson's Fishes of the World 2006, in which Nelson chose not to follow Imamura's 2004 split of the Scorpaenidae pending greater elucidation of the relationships through future research, but held even his own tentative treatment as "not satisfactory". This page and those of the taxa included in it follow Eschmeyer's treatment in the online Catalog of Fishes, and since Eschmeyer's specialty is scorpionfishes, it makes particular sense that it should do so.
