Name is now a synonym

[edit]

Pyrenopezizaceae was recommended for use as the earliest validly published name for this family by Doweld, 2022, taken up by Hyde et al., 2024, on the basis that the earlier published name Ploettnerulaceae W. Kirschtein, 1924 was not validly published (a nomen nudum, no associated description), the same also applying in the case of its revived version viz. Ploettnerulaceae W. Kirschtein ex W. Jaklitsch et al., 2016. However according to Baral et al., 2025 (and now endorsed by MycoBank as at 2026), Ploettnerulaceae W. Kirschtein, 1924 was in fact validly published, the associated description being placed elsewhere in the text:

The family name Ploettnerulaceae was described by Kirschstein (1924) to include the new genus Ploettnerula Kirschst. and four further genera, three previously placed in Mollisiaceae (Beloniella Sacc., Pirottaea Sacc., Pyrenopeziza Fuckel) and one in Tryblidiaceae (Odontotrema Nyl.). Ploettnerulaceae was considered by Doweld (2022) to be a nomen nudum because “the author did not associate any description with the proposed family name”. He therefore proposed to conserve the younger Pyrenopezizaceae Fuckel against the older Excipulaceae Fr. This view was also shared by P.R. Johnston and T. Hosoya in the new Outline (Hyde et al. 2024: 5920, note 1287). However, Kirschstein’s diagnosis of the new family is hidden in the main text after he introduced the new genus Ploettnerula Kirschst. It includes initially closed, immersed [erumpent], membraneous apothecia and the statement (translated): “It [Ploettnerula] differs from the families Stictidaceae and Phacidiaceae by its well-developed receptacle, and from the family Tryblidiaceae by its membranous nature. I therefore combine the above-mentioned genera into the family Plöttnerulaceae, the key of which will be established after the description of the only Plöttnerula species.” In conclusion, it is Ploettnerulaceae instead of Pyrenopezizaceae which we adopted here.

(The correctness of this interpretation has now been reflected in the current, May 2026 version of MycoBank as well as Index Fungorum). The family name Ploettnerulaceae W. Kirschtein, 1924 thus needs to be created in Wikispecies and relevant flow-on actions taken including transfer there of the genera presently listed for Pyrenopezizaceae.
