Talk:Nivenioideae

Nivenioideae are apparently paraphyletic; the genera Klattia, Nivenia and Witsenia are closely related, but the other three are isolated.

The current (12/1/06) treatment at http://www.mobot.org/MOBOT/Research/APweb/ groups all six genera into an expanded Crocoideae. I understand that, if the dogma of cladistics is to be strictly followed, this is the best that can be done for the present. But it overrides the distinctive morphological synapomorphies that define Crocoideae sensu stricto. Until the phylogeny of these deep branches in the irids is better known, I suggest retaining the four subfamilies including Nivenioideae.

The current thinking is moving towards retaining this subfamily, but moving Aristea to Aristeoideae, Patersonia to Patersonioideae and Geosiris to Geosiridoideae (see refs over). This renders Nivenioideae monophyletic with a "woody" apomorphy, but has minimal effects of the rest of the family. However, monotypic subfamilies are not ideal (although of course they are monophyletic!), but the alternative of an expanded Crocoideae would lead to a problem identifying morphological apomorphies!
